About... the series

This series of books provides the opportunity for pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2 to encounter Christianity as a vibrant, contemporary religion. Pupils are encouraged to respond creatively and imaginatively to the ways in which Christianity finds expression in different cultures throughout the world.

What is in the new books?

In the big book Christian ideas are introduced about God creating and changing the world, and so pupils can explore the concept of transformation. This is tackled through a range of images and language to inspire an imaginative journey. Some of these ideas and experiences will be familiar to the pupils, and from this they can be taken on to develop their knowledge and understanding of the way Christians view the world.

Encounter Christianity aims to ensure that:

  • Christianity is presented as a living tradition; this will mean recognizing that it has a past with which it remains in dialogue, and that it is a tradition that changes and develops;
  • it presents living communities, both local and global; that unity and diversity will be part of this presentation;
  • authentic materials are drawn from this living tradition, offering insights into the tradition and providing 'resources within the resource'.

The approach is not meant to lead pupils into faith, nor is it written with the assumption that they know anything about Christianity. On each page, pupils are invited to reflect on some important questions. On occasions they are told what Christians believe. The questions are intentionally open, with the opportunity for teacher and pupil to respond together. On each page the picture and text support the teacher in guiding the pupils' discussions. The text is, in effect, a 'discussion starter'. Pupils should be encouraged to comment or to raise their own queries and teachers, too, may wish to pose questions. A thread runs through the books. The text is an integral part of that thread.
